We recognise needs in health and mobility change over time, so we support tenants in making the necessary changes to help them live safely and comfortably for as long as possible. We achieve this through effective planning, consultation and delivery of aids and adaptations.
What are aids and adaptations?
Aids and adaptations are defined as any equipment, fitting, or modification provided to a resident or made to their home that will assist them with mobility, privacy, and independence. These enhancements promote an increased sense of well-being and improve the quality of life for residents in their own homes.
Aid
An aid is a piece of equipment which is portable and not permanently fixed in the home. Examples include a perching stool, chair raisers, toilet seats or frames, bathing equipment and portable ramps. These are typically delivered via statutory agencies or can be sourced privately.
Adaptations
This is the provision of fixed equipment and/or modification to the property, or associated land, where it has been recognised by an Occupational Therapist that an aid alone, or specialised equipment, will no longer meet an identified need to enable a resident or other permanent members of the household to live independently in their home.
We classify adaptations as either minor adaptations, for example, items such as lever taps, grab rails and stair rails, or major adaptations; for example, level access showers, wet rooms, stairlifts, or bath showers and the provision of fixed door access ramps.
Adaptations can be realised in a number of ways:
- Through statutory agencies
- Through residents’ self-funding works following our Self-Funded Improvements Policy
- Through the Board
