As a faith investor that aims to deliver on the Church’s values as well as the recommendations of the Church of England’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group (EIAG), human rights is a key priority for the Pensions Board.

Our approach is led by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and includes: conducting human rights due diligence, analysing new human rights data, holding dialogues with the companies in which we invest, raising queries with our asset managers, responding to member queries, policy engagement and participating in knowledge gathering and sharing activities.

Our goal is to steward our investments in a way that encourages socially responsible business conduct and to support the conditions for just, peaceful societies in which individuals and communities can flourish.

Often – as with many areas of the Pensions Board’s work – we work to address these challenges through collaborating with other responsible investors to amplify our concerns and our potential impact.

We also take the opportunity to inform our engagements and how we identify priorities by analysing information shared by civil society organisations, and sometimes by working in partnership with them too. These efforts work most effectively when they connect with and help to boost the work of advocates within companies who themselves are trying to ensure best practice standards for the customers, communities and workers whose lives their business impacts.

We currently participate in the following initiatives:
